As if Kias weren’t inexpensive enough, now the South Korean automaker has created two special editions based off of their c’eed and pro_cee’d models. They’re called the VR-7 Special Editions and they are currently on sale.

Skoda’s 2010 IRC Championship win may not have gotten a ton of headlines from the press, but it certainly hasn’t stopped the automaker from releasing a special edition Fabia RS that was created to celebrate the automaker’s title win in the IRC, or as some folks would call it, the breeding ground and stepping stone towards the more famous WRC.

While several staffers drove a pair of Kizashis through Japan, Russia, Canada, and the U.S., our long-termer stayed home. On one staffer's drive, it suffered minor damage when a bit of debris became lodged in one of the front fenderwells. A long-neglected segment in the U.S. market, the subcompact scene has suddenly gotten very interesting. First came Honda's second-generation Fit, which set the bar for the other contenders. Then, Ford's Euro-cutie 2011 Fiesta made its stateside debut, followed shortly thereafter by its distant cousin, the Mazda2. All along, Hyundai's Accent soldiered on as competent, if somewhat unremarkable, contender in the segment. Its competitiveness in the U.S. market was also hampered by the lack of a five-door configuration.

Automotive manufacturers have tried it several times over the years. The practice was a matter of survival for some (Audi), and for others it was a schizophrenic fit of badge-swapping and marketing spin. Most of them regretted doing it. Volkswagen changed the name of our beloved Rabbit to the Euro-market Golf, to Rabbit, and back again to Golf. More recently, Ford tried changing the name from Taurus to 500 and back to Taurus. Whoops.

Road Test editor Scott Mortara headed down the quarter mile in the bright-yellow Boss 302 Mustang, steadying his speed for Motor Trend's standard brake test, just as he's done a thousand times before. Back in the day, before anti-lock brakes and stability control systems and decent tires, you never knew quite which direction the car might be facing when you finished a brake test. These days, though, it's fairly simple: At about 70 mph, you grenade the brake pedal and hang on. The electronic nannies keep the cars nice and straight, and our sophisticated on-board data-logging equipment automatically captures the distance it takes to decelerate from 60 mph to a standstill.
