Lamborghini has always been known for building hairy-chest-pounding, unapologetic supercars. The kind of cars that make enthusiasts tingle and environmentalists draw on posterboard with big black markers. It was a bit of a shock when Lamborghini recently announced an initiative to increase the efficiency of its Raging Bulls, and fans of Sant' Agata's creations cringed at the thought of smaller, less-powerful cars. Well, they can put their fears to rest, because the new Lamborghini LP700-4 Aventador is as monstrous as any Lambo in history -- and it's more efficient to boot.

When the Mazda Cosmo Sport broke cover in Japan in May 1967, its combination of drop-dead good looks and the world's first production rotary engine placed it in a segment all its own, lending it instant cult status. The coupe seemed a decade ahead of its time. It even appeared as a state-of-the-art patrol car in the futuristic 1971 Japanese TV series "The Return of Ultraman." As the show's protagonist cruised down deserted Tokyo streets, passing boxy, nondescript 1960s sedans, his Cosmo Sport looked like a road-going spaceship ready to blast off.

Automotive manufacturers have tried it several times over the years. The practice was a matter of survival for some (Audi), and for others it was a schizophrenic fit of badge-swapping and marketing spin. Most of them regretted doing it. Volkswagen changed the name of our beloved Rabbit to the Euro-market Golf, to Rabbit, and back again to Golf. More recently, Ford tried changing the name from Taurus to 500 and back to Taurus. Whoops.

We had only driven two blocks in the test vehicle, a 2007 Saturn Vue Green Line, when my wife put a damper on the enthusiasm I was mustering for this budget hybrid.

In the summer of 2002, Chris Hrabalek, an Austrian automotive designer, sees a Ferrari Dino 246GT stranded on a Spanish road close to Sitges. Hoping to lend a hand, Hrabalek gets out and introduces himself to the driver, German Michael Stoschek. They start working on the Dino. They get to talking. It turns out that the men share something beyond the breakdown lane on the road to Sitges: namely, a passion for the Lancia Stratos HF rally car of the ’70s. In fact, they had met once before, at a Stratos convention in 1986. Hrabalek was nine years old.

Porsche’s plans for hybrid road vehicles are nothing new—the company plans to introduce a hybrid Cayenne SUV in the truck’s next generation, as well as a hybrid version of its Panamera sedan—but at the Geneva auto show, the German sports-car king will introduce a hybrid race car based on its 911 GT3 R. It’s no mere concept, either. Following its debut, the car will head to the Nürburgring, where it will compete in the 24-hour race on May 15 and 16.

This past year, Mercedes-Benz released its new E-class sedan and coupe, and now the 2011 E-class convertible has been unveiled, replacing the CLK droptop in the Mercedes lineup just as the E coupe replaced the fixed-roof CLK. The E-class sedan has long been one of the bread-and-butter cars for M-B, and the E lineup as a whole should be guaranteed bestselling-Benz status given its four-model breadth: E-class sedan, E-class coupe, E-class convertible, and the forthcoming E-class wagon.

Mercedes will begin manufacturing its E-Class mileage-meister next year. When the company's first diesel-electric powered car was previewed at the Geneva auto show in March 2010, production was promised for 2011. Now executives admit the hybrid version of the E-Class won't be showroom-ready until sometime in 2012.
