If you've ever heaped a forkful of well-made coq au vin into your mouth, you already understand what I'm about to tell you. Coq au vin, or, in English, "rooster in wine," is a simple dish of basic, if not ignoble ingredients: one tough old rooster, some fatty bacon, mushrooms, an onion (perhaps), and a bottle of mediocre table wine.

Ford Australia had an embarrassing problem with its high-performance six-cylinder Falcon sedan: The Ford Performance Vehicles F6 was, er, faster than its V-8-powered counterpart, the FPV GT. The F6's 4.0-liter straight-six might have had the same bore-center spacing as the straight-six fitted to the first Australian-built Falcon a half century ago, but like Grandpa's axe, everything else had been replaced or renewed over the years. With its twin-cam, four-valve cylinder head and Garrett GT3540 turbocharger, the F6's all-Aussie six delivered 415 horsepower and 416 pound-feet of torque. The U.S.-built 5.4-liter V-8 that powered the GT boasted just 7 more horses -- and 10 pound-feet less torque. As a result, the GT was a second slower over the quarter mile and, because it weighed more, less fun in the twisties.

It's not too often that we're invited to drive a vehicle that we'll never see on an American road. But that was the case with the just-introduced-in-Europe 2011 Forester 2.0X, which Subaru invited a handful of U.S. journalists to sample in Budapest, Hungary. Why? Well, we can tell you it wasn't for the scenery, as the Hungarian countryside in the middle of January is about as photogenic as dust. No, it was for the 2.0X's all-new engine, which, unlike the Forester we drove, will indeed make its way to America. Codenamed FB20, this 2.0-liter flat-four heads stateside later this year in the 2012 Impreza, of which we got a preview (Impreza Design Concept) at the 2010 Los Angeles auto show.

The sun is beating down, wind is whipping over a raked-back windshield, and our slinky steed is swallowing asphalt at one-and-a-half miles per minute. We're driving a 2006 Pontiac Solstice from Northern Oregon to Los Angeles in a single day, and life is good.

So that's that.

After 12 months and more than 17,000 miles, the sun has finally set on our time with our long-term 2006 Pontiac Solstice. If you've read anything we've written about the Pontiac in the last year, you won't be surprised that we're not terribly broken up about the parting of ways with this little roadster. While it provided us with lots of wonderful photographs, the sexy-looking drop top wore us down over the long haul with high levels of interior noise, a jarring ride around town and a drivetrain that provided more vibration than enjoyable performance.

Long before Desperate Housewives and Arrested Development there existed a devious-family drama called The Lion in Winter. Early on in the play, the adulterous King Henry of England addresses the object of his infidelity, future daughter-in-law Alais, with the following line while arranging a wisp of her hair: "Let's have one hair askew; nothing in life has any business being perfect."

The way the 911 range unfolds with each generation has become as predictable as Mission: Impossible III. First comes the "base" Carrera and Carrera S; then the AWD Carrera 4; Cabriolet versions of those; followed by the hard-core GT3; then the Turbo; maybe a Targa; and finally the loony GT2. It's all completed just in time to start the cycle all over again with the next-generation 911.

MKB Tuner Pulls Additional Power From the Mercedes SLS AMG
MKB Tuner Pulls Additional Power From the Mercedes SLS AMG

If you haven’t already surmised from the influx of Mercedes SLS AMG coverage as of late, the new Gullwing seems to be one of the most popular cars at the Geneva Motor Show among tuners this year. One reason undoubtedly is because the SLS AMG offers the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine along with its technical resemblance to modern race cars. The latest to turn their attention to the SLS is German tuning company MKB, who went under the hood of the model and managed to raise the power from 571 hp to 638 hp – a nice boost for the power hungry among you. Along with the increased horsepower is increased torque, growing from 650 Nm to 710 Nm.

Entering the compact-car market as a new or updated model for 2007 is, well, not new. With the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris and a newly redesigned Hyundai Accent already on sale, the entry of the 2007 Chevrolet Aveo into this highly competitive segment seems like old news. And in this case, old news isn't such good news for General Motors.

Ford’s compact C-Max vanlet, launched as the Focus C-Max in Europe in 2002, has been such a sensation that Ford followed it up by launching a full line of MPVs, including the larger S-Max and Galaxy. The idea was to make Ford of Europe the go-to company when it comes to one-box vehicles, sort of what Chrysler used to be here in the U.S.
