What we have here is some Alanis Morissette-style irony. No, not ra-ay-ain on your wedding day. Rather, it's the one week when you have a pair of RWD, manny-trannied, V-8 powered, 400-plus horsepower convertible ponycars and Southern California decides to experience the "Storm of the Decade." Did I mention both cars had summer tires? Unlike Alanis's song, ironic isn't the word we'd use, and we can't print the one we would. But like Hunter S. Thompson alluded to, we're here to cover the story. Reviewing convertibles with the sun shining (so to speak) is sine qua non. Knowing that we simply had to remove the roofs despite the inclement weather, we donned full rain gear, dropped them tops and drove the new Camaro SS Convertible and Mustang GT Convertible in the pouring rain. The whole ordeal is a great lesson in making lemonade out of flash floods and mudslides. Besides, can you think of anything more fun than flinging these two mamma-jammas around in the wet while dressed up like the Gorton's Fisherman? Neither could we.

I don't own one and I don't want one, but in my prior career I helped design Chrysler's second-gen minivan, and that exercise involved a whole lot of benchmarking and voice-of-the-customer research. That experience sticks with me when I do minivan comparisons like the one we ran last December, and I still stand by our finishing order. But because this was one of those rare holiday seasons that had the families from both sides of our household visiting over two weeks, I reckoned a real-world rematch of the top-finishing Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna might be in order.

Infiniti is preparing to enter a new market segment with the launch of the JX crossover, a 7-seater luxury model. The company hasn’t revealed many details on this concept as of yet, and apparently they are not going to until the vehicle makes its official debut at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August. A production version will be revealed in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but the vehicle won’t be going on sale until Spring 2012 as a 2013 model.

The Life Ball has succeeded in raising money for the cause and has also facilitated raising the awareness of the disease. Since 2001, Mini has also taken part in the event by creating a legendary one-off MINI to be placed up for auction to benefit the organization. This year, a Mini Cooper S will be designed by Dean and Dan Caten - better known as the design duo from DSQUARED - and will make its official debut on May 21, 2011 in Vienna.

Normally, coupes are exercises in vanity: all fluff and no substance. Ego-trumping sensibility. Liberace bitch-slapping Alan Greenspan. No one knows this better than BMW, which has been in the 3 Series game since Gerald Ford was cracking his knuckles in the Oval Office. It's getting pretty good at the game, as evidenced by the outstanding latest version of the 3 Series, which debuted as a 2006 model in "E90" sedan form only. As in previous generations, the coupe version is released just when the panting over the sedan has subsided.

Like an expectant parent, GM can’t help showing off the ultrasounds of its still-gestating 2011 Chevrolet Volt. “Look, look!” the company seems to be exclaiming. “It has a pretty battery and the most adorable internal-combustion engine ever! Isn’t it the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?!” But once past the obligatory oohing and aahing, the question remains whether the newborn Volt will be a really sweet car or a colicky, whining, crying brat.

Frugal and fun to drive, the Ford Ka is proof that American automakers can build great small cars when they want to. In Europe, where a gallon of gas can cost more than $9, Ford never really had much of a choice in the matter. When gas prices in the U.S. were on the rise, there was talk of possibly bringing the Ka to our shores, but those voices have since died down in the wake of buck-fifty fuel.
