Locals' heads swivel in unison as our caravan of entry-level luxury rolls through the streets of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. Dozens of automotive journalists in reworked Mercedes C-Classes wind through the narrow streets like the German Secret Service on holiday. The island is filled with tiny Peugeots and Seats, so even the smallest of the Mercedes sedan family suddenly looks like a land yacht navigating among the brightly painted stucco buildings and thatch umbrellas.
Mercedes has chosen Tenerife to preview the 2012 Mercedes C-Class and SLK so that we can drive in every environment you can imagine, and probably even some you can't. Journalists get pretty jaded about exotic locations, but this one is borderline insane. Rainforest, desert, beaches, even a 12,000-foot volcano are all located on the 500,000-acre island. As a bonus, the local department of civil engineering doesn't seem to own a single straightedge.

Snub-nosed and broad-shouldered, the 2012 Bentley Continental GT epitomizes the cliche "things are not always what they seem." Although it weighs more than many a sport/utility (5100 pounds) and looks like a prince's imperious weekend cruiser, the GT excels at doing what you think it can't -- in this case, blasting from 0 to 60 in an estimated 4.4 seconds and hitting a top speed of 198 mph.

Hennessey isn’t just about creating uber-sexy vehicles like the Venom GT. In fact, a lot of their projects entail tuning up existing models and then slapping on an HPE title coupled with the appropriate horsepower number. The latest vehicle to be blessed with the alphanumeric title is the 2009-2011 Dodge Ram and its new HPE500 designation.

Gaps kill.

If the Yankees have a gap at second base, they're going to lose games. If a bridge has gaps in its span, it's gonna fall down. No matter how great something is, gaps will eventually destroy it if left unfilled.

A clown car phenomenon is sweeping the auto industry. The Scion xA, Honda Fit, Kia Rio5 and Toyota Yaris are all not only comically shaped but capable of cramming five passengers into their diminutive proportions. Born out of rising gas prices and long wait lists for hybrids, this trick gets you high fuel-efficiency and a low sticker price without having to sacrifice people-hauling capability.

Inside Line concludes our 12-month test of the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Over its 28,000-mile lifetime in our fleet, our long-term FJ bested the trails of Death Valley, Mammoth Mountain and Yosemite National Park. A couple of pesky rocks got the best of it, however.

The all new 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster made its official U.S. Debut at New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The scene at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week heated up as fans got their first glimpse of the red 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster. Lincoln Center, the heart of the most anticipated runway shows with more than 80 designers presenting their Fall 2011 collections including Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang, Michael Kors, Derek Lam, Tommy Hillfiger, Prabal Gurung, Nicole Miller, Charlotte Ronson, Tory Burch, and Betsey Johnson was the location for the roadster’s debut.

The 2007 BMW M6 Convertible is virtually the same car as the M6 coupe sans haut: same "Power" button that summons an extra 100 horsepower; same three-position damper control button; same seven-speed automated-clutch manual transmission (sadly); same variable differential lock and programmable "M" button that accesses your favorite performance settings (of the 279 possible), or as we prefer, the full-commando max-mental mode the car is capable of.

As rare a sight as the Mercedes-Benz CL-class coupe is (unless you live in Beverly Hills or Monte Carlo) the arrival of a new one—or even a refreshed one, as is the case here—is nevertheless newsworthy. For 2011, the S-class's two-door sibling (which will not be renamed the S-class coupe as previously thought, although that may happen for the next, all-new generation) is available in the same lineup as last year. The all-wheel-drive CL550 4MATIC and rear-wheel-drive CL600 are both mildly reshaped and updated with a raft of new bits that are sure to trickle down into much of the rest of the lineup soon. New CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG models will make their debuts later.

Wanna see a Ford guy wince? Call the Mustang V-6 a “secretary’s car.” This used to be a reliably fun way to annoy our hosts (or get a beer poured down our backs) at Mustang events, primarily because it was true: with its wheezy, old 4.0-liter V-6 putting out a wimpy-for-a-muscle-car 210 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque, the base ‘Stang couldn’t outrun a Honda Accord V-6. But it seems that our last jab has been made, now that Ford has announced that its 2011 Mustang V-6 will have its power juiced up by some 45 percent to 305 hp, with torque rising 40 lb-ft to 280.

Mercedes and Audi may have drawn first blood in the electric-powered supercar wars with their SLS AMG E-Cell and e-tron prototypes respectively, but Toyota is reportedly set to take the fight to the Germans with an all-electric super sports car program of its own -- possibly with help from its new partner, Tesla.

Nissan's Expanding Electric Vehicle Lineup Surfaces
At the technical briefing for Nissan's revolutionary new Leaf electric vehicle in Japan recently, the press department nearly caught us off guard by flashing some unexpected images between reams of diagrams and figures expounding the virtues of the Leaf. Luckily we had our trusty camera at the right moment and were able to capture three sketches that help bring the company's future electric vehicle plans into focus.
