It's gotten bad enough that Volvo, long a champion of these versatile automobiles, is throwing in the towel. That makes it all the more amazing that the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon was even built -- especially when you consider how close to the abyss General Motors was during its development.

Our spy photographers have caught the next-generation Mercedes-Benz ML SUV out testing in advance of its debut this year.
The photos are the clearest sneak-peek we've had for the popular Benz luxury SUV. Current ML350 owners will definitely recognize the new ML as related, but there are a few changes. A larger grille, revised front fascia, and teardrop-like headlights are new, as is the reshaped hood.

This has been a long time coming. We almost bought a used 911 back in 2007 when we started buying fun modern classics for our long-term fleet, but a 1984 Ferrari 308 GTS caught our eye and our dollars. After that we were shopping 911s when we bought a 2002 BMW M3 (E46). And again, we were cruising for Porsches on eBay last year when we bought our 2002 Chevy Corvette Z06, which we still own.

Although it doesn't qualify as an all-new model — there's still enough 2005 Explorer in the mix to prevent that distinction — the 2006 Explorer has had a heck of a lot more work done on it than just a face-lift (that's not the sexist part — the sexist part's still coming).

Toyota introduced the original 2001 Prius to the U.S. in Y2K, nearly a dozen years ago. Since then, Japan's behemoth automaker has sold a cool two million of its shovel-nose gas-electric, with half that tally being consumed in the United States. In Los Angeles, the Prius is conspicuously common and comprehensibly cool -- about as ubiquitous as a Hollywood wannabe yet as special as a Hollywood star. That it took Toyota well over a decade to give its haute hybrid a sibling brings one thought to mind: What took so long?
