When we first drove Infiniti's new entry-level G25 sedan late last year, we found the car to be a mixed bag. While the G25 was far from a standout dynamically and was relatively light on luxury equipment, it did offer a few advantages over its more expensive G37 brother, namely a lower base price and a smoother V-6 engine. Yes, BMW says it will produce the Gran Coupe concept. But as what? As unveiled at the Beijing auto show, it looks like a Mercedes-Benz CLS/Audi A7 competitor, a "four-door sport coupe." However, the Gran Coupe is actually a major hint at the new 2012 6 Series two-door coupe and convertible.

This past year, Mercedes-Benz released its new E-class sedan and coupe, and now the 2011 E-class convertible has been unveiled, replacing the CLK droptop in the Mercedes lineup just as the E coupe replaced the fixed-roof CLK. The E-class sedan has long been one of the bread-and-butter cars for M-B, and the E lineup as a whole should be guaranteed bestselling-Benz status given its four-model breadth: E-class sedan, E-class coupe, E-class convertible, and the forthcoming E-class wagon.

Though not direct competitors, they're both truck-based 4x4s with monster motors. Chevrolet will finally offer a hot truck (the Silverado SS isn't it) with its long-anticipated TrailBlazer SS (lead image). GM Performance Division stuffed an LS2 6.0-liter V-8 under the hood and lowered the suspension and then tuned and tested it at the Nurburgring. The 6.0-liter small-block makes 390 horses and 405 pound-feet in the SSR. Chevy estimates a sub-six-second 0-to-60-mph time for the TB SS, which will be offered with rear- or four-wheel drive.

Mercedes will begin manufacturing its E-Class mileage-meister next year. When the company's first diesel-electric powered car was previewed at the Geneva auto show in March 2010, production was promised for 2011. Now executives admit the hybrid version of the E-Class won't be showroom-ready until sometime in 2012.
