The existence of the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon -- a brazen, wonderful, and bewildering thing -- is a miracle. Pointless excess manifested onto four wheels, this 556-horsepower creature, equipped with a manual transmission, has the appeal of a 72-ounce steak that you have to eat in an improbably short amount of time to get it free. Its awesomeness is strangely addictive; people watch "Man vs. Food," after all. And they enjoy it.
The Caddy's ingredients may lack the preposterous quantities in the overweight cheeseburgers on that show, but they nonetheless astonish:

We are all used to BMW launching a new model and, sometime after, getting that model its very own M-Sport package. Even with the top up, in a blinding rainstorm, the 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio was still enjoyable during a recent drive through Manhattan and just north of New York City. And with its EPA estimated 38 mpg on the highway, or 32 mpg, with the optional automatic transmission, it was pretty efficient the whole way, too.

As we wondered about the need for such a lovably absurd vehicle as the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, we could almost hear the gruff voice of Patches O'Houlihan of Dodgeball fame. "Necessary?" he'd exclaim with one eyebrow raised. "Is it necessary to have 420 horsepower in a Grand Cherokee? Probably not. But it looks and sounds mean and I like the performance." And after a week in this road-bound hyper-Hemi SUV, we'd have to agree with the crusty son of a gun.

The 2007 Honda CR-V will never inflame the sort of passion that sends you out to the driveway in your pajamas at 2 a.m. just for a gawk or a little g-sampling blast up and down a desolate two-laner. It just wasn't built for that. It's not part of the portfolio.
