Winter Run: 2011 Nissan Leaf vs 2011 Chevrolet Volt

As we racked up real-world cold-weather experience in Motor Trend's long-term Volt, we found ourselves wondering how it would stack up with the closest electric competition currently available: the Nissan Leaf. So we borrowed a Leaf SL-e for a week. Entry Leaf SV pricing starts at $33,630; the SL adds a tiny photovoltaic panel on the rear spoiler, a rear-view camera, fogs, Homelink, and a cargo cover for a reasonable $940; and the "-e" includes a port to allow occasional quick recharges (80 percent in 30 minutes) from a DC fast charging station. This port is a $700 option, but the SL-e package makes it free to qualifying recipients of the Department of Energy's Energy Technology Engineering Center grant. Most folks will then subtract the $7500 federal tax credit from all of those numbers.

There was only one Mustang that Ford had yet to recreate -- the baddest of all, the Boss. That is, until now. Meet the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302, the best, most well-rounded Mustang ever.
What exactly did Ford do to get such great performance? Lots. Engineers started with a standard 5.0-liter engine, but instead of just throwing a supercharger on it, Ford kept this engine au natural and made it a free-flowing, high-revving screamer with a new "runners-in-the-box" plenum/velocity stack combination. Ford used revised camshafts with a more aggressive grind, and CNC machined the intake, exhaust ports, and combustion chambers of the aluminum heads.
