Sales of the Toyota Yaris (called Vitz in Japan) took a header last year in the American market, dropping almost 40 percent over 2009, which was one of the worst sales years in forever. To say that Toyota needs to give its small car some love is an understatement, and that makes the U.S. debut of the new 2012 Toyota Yaris all the more important .
“We need to stand out more,” says deputy chief engineer Yoshinari Toyomura. “That is one reason why the new Yaris has grown in size and taken on an edgier look compared to its predecessor.”

The Shanghai Auto Show came and went with one star-studded concept slipping under the radar from a little unknown company called Icona Shanghai. Icona is a design studio based out of China and focusing on projects in China and Asia. Audi's RS division, which all but ignores the U.S. market, is keeping busy. It just released the RS3 in Europe, and next year will launch the new RS4. Most of its mechanicals come from the RS5, including a naturally aspirated V-8 engine making 444 horsepower at 8250 rpm. It feeds a crown gear center diff that's able to send torque forward or backward according to programmed maps, making the car feel oversteery and driver-sensitive. Transmission is a seven-speed S-Tronic twin-clutch. Active variable-ratio steering will be optional. The bodywork will incorporate extra aluminum compared with the regular A4's, and be available in sedan and Avant variants.

This has been a long time coming. We almost bought a used 911 back in 2007 when we started buying fun modern classics for our long-term fleet, but a 1984 Ferrari 308 GTS caught our eye and our dollars. Sitting on the Mercedes-Benz stand at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2004, the first CLS astonished styling critics. Even die-hard two-seater fans liked its radical new four-door coupe design. With that hammered roof, arched body reveals and radius-ed wheel openings, the low-slung CLS500 looked more like a snazzy show car than a boring sedan. Then the supercharged CLS55 AMG soon appeared with 469 horsepower.

Brabus has been building the world’s fastest street-legal vehicles for some time now, which, as you may remember, includes the mighty Brabus Rocket. Based on the prior Mercedes-Benz CLS platform, the Brabus Rocket has a top speed of 227.24 mph, and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in a mere 4.0 seconds. Now, with the release of the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, Brabus has again turned their attention to Mercedes’ four-door coupe range, although it will likely be some time before we see another 200+ mph variant.

Lotus has dropped the idea of using modified Toyota engines in its next generation of sports cars. Instead it is rushing out an all-new engine family. It will be a lightweight, high-revving, naturally aspirated V-8 making 550 horsepower-plus. Later, a 90-degree V-6 and possibly inline-four modular derivatives will join the family for the replacements for the Evora (called Elan) and Elise.
