Let's Get Small: The Pod-Like Cars of the Future Won't Fly, But They'll Be WAY Easier to Park

As has been suspected for a long while, BMW and the new Carbon Motors announced an agreement today that will supply Carbon’s upcoming police cruiser with BMW’s fantastic 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel engine. What was somewhat of a surprise was the agreed-upon volume: 240,000 engines—ready to install, complete with six-speed automatic transmissions. Considering that the police market accounts for about 60,000 vehicles annually and that Carbon is an unknown, that supply ought to last the company some time.

Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener is starting to reshape the future look of the Stuttgart carmaker. As such, some of the firm’s show cars of the recent past, such as the 2005 Bionic Car or the 2007 F700, primarily must be interpreted as design exercises. But with Wagener taking the helm in mid-2008, the direction of Mercedes styling has been whittled down to some precisely defined, common themes.

Nothing says "I've still got sack" like a 100-foot burnout in a supercharged, pushrod-powered American wagon loaded with a toddler, a stroller, a case of Huggies pull-ups and 2 gallons of organic reduced-fat milk. This, friends, is the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon. It's a machine built for the unemasculated American male who still makes a nod to utility. And we want one. Badly.

Inside Line's long-term review of the 2007 Cadillac SRX is complete. We accumulated nearly 25,000 miles and traversed six states over the past 12 months in an effort to test GM's commitment to improved quality.

If sports cars are from Mars and minivans are from Venus, the 2006 Cadillac CTS comes straight from the manly red planet. With all that hyper-aggressive styling and sharp edges, there's little doubt that this sport sedan was designed to appeal to the Y chromosome.

We're driving a 2007 Cadillac Escalade, which means we've enjoyed a week's worth of middle-aged office guys asking us about Nelly, Snoop and other hip-hop artists they'd never listen to with the windows down. Yet they wouldn't even crack a smile when we invited them to suit up in Fubu and take a ride down the Sunset Strip.

It takes a serious set of stones to go after the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG. The two have been the undisputed kings of four-door performance for nearly two decades. Challenging them is like picking a fight with Clubber Lang and Drago at the same time, and even Rocky wasn't punchy enough to do that.

The Cadillac SRX was unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and is going on sale starting at $33,330 for the base 3.0 Liter V6 powered front wheel drive version and climbs all the way up to $51,360 for the 2.8 Liter six cylinder Turbo Premium version. As the Cadillac of crossovers enters its second generation, the completely redesigned SRX delivers a dynamic alternative in terms of visual appeal and driving character to ordinary CUVs with its downsized fuel efficient gas burning engines. The SRX comes standard with a front wheel drive layout and is available with all wheel drive as an option. It is built atop a version of General Motors’ Theta platform that is also used for the Chevrolet Equinox and the Epsilon II platform that is also used for the European Opel Insignia.

On paper, a race against a Japanese buzzsaw called the Cadillac Escalade SUV and the ’Godzilla’ Nissan GT-R, doesn’t seem like a fair fight, especially when you consider that the ’fight’ is actually a 0-60 mph test to see which vehicle can hit the mark first. On one end, you have the Japanese buzzsaw called the Nissan GT-R, a car that has earned the nickname, ’Godzilla’. Can a three-ton SUV whose hulking mass is enough to drag itself down compete against the faster GT-R? Hennessey has made sure of it.

It's the sort of thing advertising guys love talking about. Visualize an early morning sunrise, hear the music build, and get a little misty-eyed at the smoky voiceover from the once-famous but still beloved celebrity. We have heard it all before -- hell, we have been hearing it for years from GM. But driving just one lap in a Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon around Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca will do more to turn you into a believer than 50 straight hours of forced marketing consumption ever could.

The existence of the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon -- a brazen, wonderful, and bewildering thing -- is a miracle. Pointless excess manifested onto four wheels, this 556-horsepower creature, equipped with a manual transmission, has the appeal of a 72-ounce steak that you have to eat in an improbably short amount of time to get it free. Its awesomeness is strangely addictive; people watch "Man vs. Food," after all. And they enjoy it.
The Caddy's ingredients may lack the preposterous quantities in the overweight cheeseburgers on that show, but they nonetheless astonish:

"Stop living in the past," say countless advice purveyors across a broad spectrum of media. It's good advice if you're trying to get over an ex-girlfriend, but you pretty much have to live in the past to drop almost $90,000 on a body-on-frame luxury SUV like the 2011 Cadillac Escalade ESV Platinum. That's $88,295 to be precise, making this the second-most-expensive Caddy available. (First place by a slight margin goes to the Escalade Hybrid.)

No other body style gets less respect in today's America than the wagon, and no other body style has to struggle as hard to garner anything resembling worthwhile sales. It's gotten bad enough that Volvo, long a champion of these versatile automobiles, is throwing in the towel. That makes it all the more amazing that the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon was even built -- especially when you consider how close to the abyss General Motors was during its development.

"Please don't hit any big bumps," my friend David pleaded, realizing there was nothing he could do to keep his head from being pressed against the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe's rear glass. Unfortunately for him, there was no other multi-seat car present, as he owns a Miata, and the third person present -- let's call him James, since that's his real name -- only owns a Lotus Elise. He drives it daily, and yes, he is a masochist.
