Having invested heavily in the Chevy Volt's plug-in hybrid Voltec powertrain, GM plans to leverage the technology as much as it can. A fashionably tweaked version of the Volt will be sold in Europe as the Opel Ampera, while the regular Volt goes on sale in China next year. The Volt MPV5 concept, making its debut at the Beijing Show, shows a Voltec-powered crossover is probably in the works, too.

Though not direct competitors, they're both truck-based 4x4s with monster motors. Chevrolet will finally offer a hot truck (the Silverado SS isn't it) with its long-anticipated TrailBlazer SS (lead image). GM Performance Division stuffed an LS2 6.0-liter V-8 under the hood and lowered the suspension and then tuned and tested it at the Nurburgring. The 6.0-liter small-block makes 390 horses and 405 pound-feet in the SSR. Chevy estimates a sub-six-second 0-to-60-mph time for the TB SS, which will be offered with rear- or four-wheel drive.

General Motors has pulled forward development of its GMT900, the wide range of high-profit full-size sport/utilities and pickup trucks, such as the Chevrolet Silverado caught here. Originally scheduled for the 2008 model year, the 900s and 925Cs (Cadillac Escalade, EXT, and ESV) will roll out beginning with the GMC Yukon at the Anaheim Auto Show in October, continuing at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, and throughout much of the year. The sport/utilities will go on sale first. Is it folly to pull forward big, fuel-inefficient trucks to bring in cash flow, just as SUV sales seem to be waning due to gas prices and crossover competition?

Following a leak earlier this week, Chevrolet has released official information about 2012 Corvette.

Like an expectant parent, GM can’t help showing off the ultrasounds of its still-gestating 2011 Chevrolet Volt. “Look, look!” the company seems to be exclaiming. “It has a pretty battery and the most adorable internal-combustion engine ever! Isn’t it the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?!” But once past the obligatory oohing and aahing, the question remains whether the newborn Volt will be a really sweet car or a colicky, whining, crying brat.
