Dodge / 2007 Dodge Caliber

2007 Dodge Caliber
Since it was first introduced at the Geneva Motor Show, we've seen the Dodge Caliber concept evolve into the closer-to-production model we caught on our way to work this morning. The 2007 Caliber keeps the familiar Dodge styling, with trademark crosshair grille, wide sculpted wheel forms, big 19-inch wheels and tires, broad shoulders, and bulging hood for a proud, powerful stance. Its yellow paint is certainly not subtle, either. As the replacement for the Dodge Neon, the five-door Caliber combines a sporty wagon-like profile with the strength, stance, and functionality of an all-wheel-drive SUV. The new platform is based on the next-gen Mitsubishi Lancer, and is expected to be modified for use in the Jeep Patriot and Compass models, and serve as a performance test-bed for Dodge. The Dodge Caliber also will be Chrysler Group's first all-wheel drive C-segment vehicle.

Expect the Caliber to be marketed as a bigger, better compact car, with all the practicality of an SUV. Powertrain options will follow other platform models using 1.8-liter, 2.0-liter, and 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines from the World Engine family, with performance objectives targeted at 140, 150, and 170 horsepower, respectively. A 2.0-liter direct-injection turbodiesel capable of producing 134 hp and peak torque of 229 lb-ft will be available for international markets.

All engines will be mated to DaimlerChrysler's CVT2 Continuously Variable Transmission for improved fuel economy and powerful seat-of-the-pants feel. An electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system will be available on North American-spec Calibers.
