Long Term Update 5: 2010 Volkswagen Routan

We continue to experience déjà vu with the Routan. As we have mentioned in the past, the Volkswagen's brakes have the same warping problem as did our long-term Town & Country a few years ago.

Arrival: 2011 Mazda2 Touring

When we first saw Mazda's tiny 2 at the 2008 Geneva show, we were immediately intrigued. Mazda execs labeled it a global B-segment car, but "global" doesn't always translate to American-bound. Would it come to the States? If so, would it endear itself to Americans enthralled with SUVs and pickups?

Verdict: 2009 Audi A4 Avant Quattro

It's time to officially put the wagon on the U.S. endangered vehicle species list.
Just this year, we learned that Volvo's new V60 won't be making the trip stateside, nor will the BMW 5 Series Estate. But despite the bad news, Cadillac is boldly going where other U.S. automakers are no longer going with its new CTS Sport Wagon. And the Germans, bless their hearts, continue to bring over (at least for now) models like the Audi A4 Avant quattro. Alas, we recently said farewell to a 2009 Avant quattro after just over a year in the MT fleet.

2011 Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster

Mercedes has caused history to repeat itself as they have come out with a roadster version for one of their popular coupes. This trend was seen in the SLR McLaren and will now repeat itself with the SLS AMG coupe version. The SLS AMG Roadster will be revealed in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but right now the car is under extreme testings.

First Drive: 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Porsche must be feeling rather chuffed right now. Aston Martin, that eccentrically English marque, has just unleashed the V8 Vantage, a car that pays homage to the seminal 911. The engine is in the front, not the rear, but conceptually, this small, everyday sport coupe is a match for the Porsche.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Sets Safety Standards for Roadsters
2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Sets Safety Standards for Roadsters

The new SLK Roadster from Mercedes-Benz sets new standards in safety. The safety experts at Mercedes-Benz have long adopted the motto, the best or nothing, coined by Gottlieb Daimler. Mercedes is not content with just hitting safety ratings, they work to attain safety levels that not only meet but far exceed standars set by the world’s legislators. The most important measure of their work is not the laboratory or crash test facility, but actual, real-life accidents. They call the results of their work Real Life Safety, a concept which is based on research into thousands of accidents. Using this irrefutable evidence, the Mercedes-Benz engineers have developed or initiated most of the assistance systems which today effectively support drivers and have been adopted by many of the company’s competitors.

Mercedes-Benz F-Cell World Drive Kicks Off Its North American Tour

The Mercedes F-CELL World Drive will be travelling across North America until March 18, demonstrating the potential of fuel cell technology. In addition, with what is to date a unique undertaking, Mercedes-Benz is reaffirming the need to develop a comprehensive global hydrogen infrastructure. “We will have reached market maturity with fuel cell technology by 2015 at the latest. From that point we would then be in a position to bring several 100,000 vehicles, in a variety of different model series, onto the roads. For example we are also planning a saloon model with fuel cell drive and will thereby expand our portfolio of local zero-emission vehicles. Therefore, by that time, an infrastructure which allows the everyday operation of such vehicles, needs to be in place.”, according to Dr. Thomas Weber, the Daimler AG Board Member responsible for Group Research and Development for Mercedes-Benz Cars. “Now is therefore the time to increase speed and consistently develop the hydrogen filling station network.”
