Consumer Reports advises against Honda Civic HF
High MPG ratings from the EPA look attractive to drivers right now with fuel prices skyrocketing, but it's important that car buyers keep things in perspective

For example, many automakers are now offering more expensive versions of their popular models that boost fuel economy by a small percentage. The extra MPGs might be tempting, but if a driver does out the math, it's usually a bad deal.

Case in point: the new Honda Civic HF, a model that Consumer Reports recommends avoiding if a driver is looking to save money.

The HF version boosts the Civic's 32 combined miles per gallon up to 33, but costs an extra $800 over the base model. The consumer guide estimates that the small increase in fuel efficiency will really only save drivers about $45 per year. In other words, you'd need to drive the car for 18 years in order to see a return on the initial $800 investment.

Rather than invest money that may not be paid back over time in a fuel-efficient vehicle, an alternate option is to refinance car loans. This simple process allows drivers to lower their monthly payments while keeping the same car that they already drive.
