What would you do with 323 cubic feet of space on wheels? (I'd swear my first apartment was smaller than that.) Nissan hopes there are plenty of small-fleet owners -- companies with less than 15 vehicles -- and individual buyers who are interested in this huge amount of space, available in the new NV line of vans. The company has done extensive research on the van market, and learned that owners in this segment are the least satisfied with their vehicles. Nissan saw this as a huge opportunity. After all, there's the rugged Titan platform; put a van body on there, and -- presto, change-o -- you have a van, right?

No new model has General Motors more concerned about the success of its launch than the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The Volt? No, as ground-breaking and politically divisive as that car is, there's little doubt Chevy will be able to sell all of them, from the 10,000 or so expected in the first year to 30,000-40,000 per year as production slowly ramps up.

Fun. It's what's been missing from the recently redesigned Volkswagen Jetta. VW gave the car new lines, a bigger cabin and more power across the board, but somewhere along the way, the Jetta got a bit too serious. So far there have been just two models, the entry-level 2.5 and the frugal TDI.

It was not by accident that Porsche chose to introduce the 2006 Cayenne Turbo S on its own world-class (assembly-line adjacent) racetrack in Leipzig, Germany, as well as in the silty, orange sand dunes outside Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Why not? Because there is simply no other production vehicle that could possibly manage to perform as well as the 520-horsepower Cayenne Turbo S does in both extreme locations.

Normally we'd mourn the passing of an engine like AMG's supercharged 5.5-liter V8, the über-huffer that's powered many of our favorite Mercedes-Benzes. However, now that we've sampled its formidable successor, AMG's new naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8, we've cancelled the wake and are planning a party instead. Woo-hoo! The new 2007 E63 sedan is the most powerful E-Class yet to blast out of Stuttgart, and it's a delight to drive, especially when the 507 horses are fully unleashed.

Dancing past slower-moving traffic on the coastal highway as if they're standing still, the Electric Red BMW 325xi leaves a wake of affronted motorists shaking their fists at its retreating form. But who wants to cruise at a leisurely Sunday pace when there's an agile car to play with and curvy roads to conquer? Besides, the 12 bags of groceries in the rear can sit this playtime out.

In late 2007, BMW started its "Project i," a sort of think tank on "sustainable" mobility, which was shrouded in mystery for a considerable time. Its first visible result, the Mini E, is notable for demonstrating the deficiencies of electric propulsion, precisely because it is so easy to compare with the regular Mini. Distributed to hand-picked customers for a one-year lease term, the all-electric Mini has a sub-100-mile range and sacrifices the rear seats and most of the cargo compartment to house its batteries.

I've never wanted to own a Porsche 911, though they are great fun to drive. They're even wilder to ride in with a pro like Walter Rohrl flailing away at the helm. Such rides sometimes make me wonder if the "laws of physics" are open to creative interpretation like our Constitution. But two mechanical engineering degrees tell me they're not, hence, in my mind no proper racebred chassis should have its engine cantilevered off the rear axle (or the front). Yes, the 911's setup loads the rear tires for better launch acceleration and provides slightly better weight distribution under hard braking, but if this arrangement is superior, why doesn't anybody else in racing use it? I'm willing to bet that a mid-engine Cayman could spank a 911 on the Nürburgring if equipped with equivalent power, tires, and chassis optimization. So is it just pig-headed German stubbornness keeping the Cayman down?
