2011 Nissan Sentra SL
The small car market in the United States has been growing by leaps and bounds in the recent years and new offerings have made existing vehicles seem outdated. These machines, such as the Hyundai Elantra and the Chevrolet Cruze, make the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla seem more at home with a horse attached to the front.

First Test: 2012 Honda Civic EX
First Test: 2012 Honda Civic EX

I must admit, when I first saw photos of the ninth-generation 2012 Civic, I was disappointed. I had been hoping for, well, more -- a more radical departure from the eighth gen, a car that, by the way, handily won our 2006 Car of the Year competition. Gen 8 earned the coveted calipers mostly because it was such -- you guessed it -- a radical departure from its predecessor. During 2006 COTY testing, I recall the Civic blowing away all the Motor Trend judges with its sleek, standout sheet metal, futuristic interior, and unbeatable value. In describing why we chose it as our COTY, we wrote: "Honda deserves a standing ovation for not playing it safe again, for crafting a compact car that's edgier and more soulful than it needs to be." For this new 2012 EX sedan, Honda deserves mildly enthusiastic seated applause.

New Porsches Going on Aluminum Diet
New Porsches Going on Aluminum Diet

Porsche will launch a cascade of new models over the next two years. The new 911, codenamed 991, is on a new platform with a lot of aluminum that will be shared with the Boxster/Cayman family. It's difficult and slow to build the new platform alongside the old one at Zuffenhausen, the main factory. The company's production people want to get all the old models out of the way as soon as possible.

Professor Ulrich Bruhnke is the head of BMW's Motorsport division. He's a big, burly German who would be quite intimidating if he didn't smile so much. Before BMW, he headed up the AMG arm of Mercedes-Benz. This guy knows horsepower.

ECO Start/Stop Function Now Standard on Mercedes S350 BlueTEC

Effective immediately, Mercedes-Benz is combining the V6 diesel engine in the S350 BlueTEC with an ECO start/stop function. As a result, the fuel consumption of the luxury class saloon has been lowered to 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres or 1.6 gallons per 62 miles (NEDC combined). The S 350 BlueTEC is also one of the world’s cleanest diesel models.

Porsche 918 Spyder Priced, Matching 911 Turbo S Will Be Optional - Car News

In the wake of the Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid's surprise launch at the 2010 Geneva auto show, Porsche made little secret of its plans to put the car into production. In fact, Porsche’s erstwhile R and D chief, Wolfgang Dürheimer—who now heads Bentley and Bugatti—personally handed this writer a form to sign up and register his interest in the car. I declined the offer, but others didn't, and official production plans were confirmed last summer thanks to “outstanding customer response.” Now, we have a price: a cool $845,000, not including destination and handling. (We suspect the destination charge will affect few people’s purchasing plans.)

2012 Ram Cargo Van
2012 Ram Cargo Van

There’s something about cargo vans that we love. Obviously, it’s not because they’re fun to drive (although there is something fantastic about pitching a self-propelled warehouse sideways, but we digress). Rather, it’s because of what they can become. As artists take to blank canvases, so do our imaginations to cargo vans. Cargo vans start out as nothing, but can become anything, from rolling billboards or innocuous delivery vehicles to clandestine command centers or mobile man caves. (Check out how we designed our own digital Ford Transit Connect.)

Suzuki Equator - First Drive Review
Suzuki Equator - First Drive Review

The first question we asked was, Why?

Why did Suzuki and Nissan apparently agree that a regrilled Frontier belongs in Suzuki showrooms? The answer, of course, is that Suzuki doesn’t sell a pickup in the U.S. (never has, actually), and Nissan evidently needs some A-segment cars in other countries.

Dodge Challenger Is A Go
Dodge Challenger Is A Go
Dodge will lead the cars built off the next-generation Chrysler LX platform--called LY--with a new Challenger ponycar for the 2010 model year. The Challenger will be a true Mustang-fighter, with 350-horsepower Hemi V-8 and 3.5-liter, 250-horsepower V-6 versions going up against the Mustang coupe. And given Chrysler's ambitions for its performance franchise, you can expect a 6.1-liter, 425-horse SRT* version as well. Dodge has no plans for a Challenger convertible, as that business will be left to the 2007 Chrysler {{{Sebring}}} replacement, although it's possible Chrysler Group could commission a coachbuilder like ASC to do one.
