Long Term Update 4: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT

Most of the people who have driven the Outlander GT have had positive comments about this compact sport/utility. One noted, "the Evo-inspired nosejob has done a great job of giving the Outlander some much-needed character. Other than the absence of a telescoping steering column, this loaded variant actually seems like a decent bargain." But at over $33,000, it isn't exactly the least expensive crossover in this category.
That said, it does have some features that are hard to find in a compact SUV, the most notable of which is the two-part tailgate. "The down-folding portion of the mini-tailgate creates a flat load floor (and can double as a seating surface), making it easy to load bulky items like dressers and coffee tables."

Another editor wrote, "Gotta say, I love the little flip-down tailgate. I own a 120-pound bass cabinet (the stringed instrument, not the fish) and because the Outlander's mini-tailgate drops down so low, I could lift the cabinet into the back by myself without issue. I can also see how it could come in handy while camping or camping out in a parking lot -- a good place to sit. Similar in size in fact to the one on the two-door Rolls-Royce."
In the cons department reside the Outlander's stereo and navigation controls, of which there are no rotary knobs, so browsing radio stations or adjusting the volume can be time-consuming.
Further, a few staffers feel some button locations are counterintuitive. And then there's our frustration with the iPod interface. If an iPod is connected and the vehicle is turned off, when you restart the Mitsu, the audio system takes up to 15 minutes to "read" the iPod before it will play music -- and it doesn't pick up where it left off. But as we struggle to accept the awkward controls and irksome iPod integration, it has thus far been easy to enjoy the smooth V-6, excellent paddle-shifter automatic, and comfortable ride.
