First Test: 2009 AMS Performance Nissan GT-R Alpha 9

"800 crank horsepower with 550 pound-feet of torque on a 93 octane tune..." the e-mail reads. It's from Martin Musial, founder and president of Chicago-based AMS Performance, one of the country's premier aftermarket race and street car builders.
Intrigued, we continue reading: "...it's capable of running low 10-second passes at well over 130 mph with stock-like drivability and reliability. Besides a louder exhaust note, the car behaves just like stock -- including spool up."
As excited as a 12-year-old at a Justin Bieber concert, we delve into our test database and scroll back to 2006. Never mind the Corvette ZR1 or Porsche Turbo -- this GT-R's claimed figures are in Veyron territory. And its price is nowhere near that of a Veyron.
"Test car, please?!" we immediately reply.

Two days later, we're at the Auto Club Speedway drag strip in Fontana, California, primed and pumped. As they're setting up, our Blackberry hums. It's another e-mail from Musial, listing the car's parts. The Alpha 9's spec sheet is a tuner's fantasy:
