Since we last tested it in 2005, the Nissan Titan has gotten a smidge more powerful, been slightly restyled, and seen its list of standard features grow. Other than that, the full-size rig has remained much the same as it was six years ago. As its sales figures show, that may not be the best tactic in challenging its heavy-hitting rivals from the Detroit Three.

In 2007, Nissan chief engineer Katzutoshi Mizuno promised the world that the first 480-horsepower, 430-pound-foot-of-torque twin-turbocharged Nissan GT-R was just the beginning, and that three years down the road, things would get even more interesting. Three years -- and upwards of seven distinct roadgoing iterations later -- Mizuno-san has lived up to his promise.

Under a full 20 psi boost blitz with the new launch control (aka R Mode Start Function) engaged, all 530 twin-turbocharged horses and 448 pound-feet of thrust catapult a motionless all-wheel drive 2012 Nissan GT-R to 60 mph in a blistering 2.9 seconds. The car that in 2007 changed a number of performance reference points is changing them once again.

What would you do with 323 cubic feet of space on wheels? (I'd swear my first apartment was smaller than that.) Nissan hopes there are plenty of small-fleet owners -- companies with less than 15 vehicles -- and individual buyers who are interested in this huge amount of space, available in the new NV line of vans. The company has done extensive research on the van market, and learned that owners in this segment are the least satisfied with their vehicles. Nissan saw this as a huge opportunity. After all, there's the rugged Titan platform; put a van body on there, and -- presto, change-o -- you have a van, right?

So we borrowed a Leaf SL-e for a week. Entry Leaf SV pricing starts at $33,630; the SL adds a tiny photovoltaic panel on the rear spoiler, a rear-view camera, fogs, Homelink, and a cargo cover for a reasonable $940; and the "-e" includes a port to allow occasional quick recharges (80 percent in 30 minutes) from a DC fast charging station. This port is a $700 option, but the SL-e package makes it free to qualifying recipients of the Department of Energy's Energy Technology Engineering Center grant. Most folks will then subtract the $7500 federal tax credit from all of those numbers.

It’s a little unnerving, but it’s a good thing it didn’t escape altogether because it is a very cool car. The model was created as a special celebration of Nissan’s huge success in GT racing all over the world and as part of the celebration the special edition gets subtle suspension revisions, special racing strips, new wheels, and three special body color choices. The V6 engine remains unchanged.

The small car market in the United States has been growing by leaps and bounds in the recent years and new offerings have made existing vehicles seem outdated. These machines, such as the Hyundai Elantra and the Chevrolet Cruze, make the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla seem more at home with a horse attached to the front.
