Over the last few years, Korea's auto giant Hyundai has experienced a renaissance. Quality has risen, style has become modern, and the driving experience is as good as any of its competitors from Japan. When the Azera rolled into our test garage, the overwhelming response was, "Oh yeah, that's still around."
The Azera is old school Hyundai, designed when the company had just started to figure out what needed to be done to play with the big boys, but couldn't quite execute it. Everything on the Korean midsize is developed to 7/10. It still seems like this is the test car for newer, better cars like the Genesis and the new Sonata. It isn't necessarily a bad car; it just isn't what we know Hyundai is capable of.

The Legacy is an overall impressive car, but as time has passed and we've clocked more than 10,000 miles, we've discovered some minor flaws. Explains exec editor Ed Loh, "Subaru, it seems, tried to stretch the dollar too far in some places, leaving the following warts uncovered. Depressing the parking brake button creates a grinding, creaking moan -- like a rusty thumbscrew being turned or a heavy iron gate being shut -- with you on the inside. Doors feel light and hollow, especially the front passenger's. Instead of closing with a reassuring clunk, they flap shut with a bonk."

A long-neglected segment in the U.S. market, the subcompact scene has suddenly gotten very interesting. First came Honda's second-generation Fit, which set the bar for the other contenders. Then, Ford's Euro-cutie 2011 Fiesta made its stateside debut, followed shortly thereafter by its distant cousin, the Mazda2. All along, Hyundai's Accent soldiered on as competent, if somewhat unremarkable, contender in the segment. Its competitiveness in the U.S. market was also hampered by the lack of a five-door configuration.

Mazda isn't really comfortable with the C-word. Oh sure, the company refers to the all-new 2007 Mazda CX-7 as a "crossover" all the time in public. But it doesn't really think the term is entirely appropriate. Crossing between what and what else, one might ask? Instead it boldly proclaims that the CX-7 is an SUV with the "soul of a sports car." Uh-huh.

Audi car sales shot up considerably in 2010 with 1,092,400 vehicles sold worldwide (a 15 percent increase over the previous year). Last year for the first time, Audi surpassed the 100,000 vehicle sold mark in the United States signifying a refreshing global acceptance that is also quickly gripping China. A brand existing on the image of cars that balances performance and luxury, high-tech drivetrains employing gasoline direct injection and quattro all-wheel drive have made the car producer a staple. Looking back just over 45 years, before the aluminum construction and quattro, the Audi fought to start this modern journey.

Earlier today we told you that Mercedes-Benz is going to be debuting a new 60-second ad in this year’s Super Bowl, and along with it will come the world debut of two new Mercedes models not yet seen by the public. The total cost to debut the new models: roughly $6 million, thanks to the Super Bowl’s impressive ad rate of $3 million per 30 seconds. A new AMG high-performance engine is expected to deliver maximum performance in all areas – and the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine driving the new CLS 63 AMG is no exception to this rule. Whether its maximum performance, torque and power delivery, engine sound, suitability for long journeys or renowned Mercedes reliability, the powerful 410 kW (557 hp) eight-cylinder engine is able to meet all of the demands which are made of it. Future challenges also include being able to achieve optimum values when it comes to efficiency too, however. Here again the CLS 63 AMG is setting standards, as evidenced by its fuel consumption of 9.9 litres (2.6 gallons) per 100 kilometres (62 miles) (NEDC combined).

The Panamera, Porsche’s fourth model line after the 911, Boxster/Cayman, and Cayenne, has arrived after years of rumor, innuendo, announcements, and buzz. A four-door fastback sedan positioned at the top of the lineup, the Panamera was officially unveiled at the Shanghai auto show in April, and Porsche chose to host the first official drive at the picturesque Schloß Elmau near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, under the shadow of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. The ritzy castle hotel is separated from the Munich airport by two hours of twisty country roads and several stretches of unlimited autobahn, and we explored it all from behind the wheels of the entry-level, rear-wheel-drive, 400-hp Panamera S and the 500-hp, all-wheel-drive Turbo.
