Deadly Crash in Utah linked to Toyota Gas Pedal Problem
The sticking gas pedal problem that prompted the recall of millions of Toyotas last year may have contributed to a deadly accident in Utah. The driver of a Toyota Camry crashed into a rock wall in Utah on November 5th, killing the driver and one of the other three passengers in the vehicle. Based on evidence taken from the scene and statements from the two surviving passengers in the vehicle, authorities believe that the accelerator in the Camry may have been stuck and that the driver could not stop the vehicle, despite applying the brakes for some time prior to impact.

The 2008 Camry hit the rock wall after coming off an exit ramp in Utah. There were visible skid marks prior to the impact point, but the car still struck the wall with enough force to kill two of the passengers, including the driver. There is no word at this time whether the passengers were wearing seatbelts or if there were other factors that may have contributed to the accident, such as weather conditions or other vehicles.

This news comes at a time when some of the recall problems for Toyota were starting to fade into distant memory. The company seems to have been on top of the servicing related to the initial round of recalls and has been proactive about issuing new recalls when it perceives that new problems are surfacing.

The investigation into this accident is ongoing and will likely draw the full attention of government regulators as well as Toyota's lawyers and engineers. New systems have been introduced by Toyota to help address issues with unwanted acceleration in its vehicles, but not every car has received them yet.
