The stairs leading to the entrance of the Getty Center -- perched above Los Angeles' perpetually gridlocked 405 highway - are long and flat, forcing visitors to slow down and enjoy their rich surroundings. That's what the 2011 Lexus LS 600h L attempts to do in the automotive world.

First Test: 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 Bluetec

It's a good thing that the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E350 Bluetec doesn't need to go to the gas station often, because people will stare at you when you go to put that green diesel nozzle into your shiny new Benz. Some would-be Good Samaritans might even inform you that you're about to put diesel into a car and that you shouldn't do that - to which you'll merely respond "why yes, I know. It's a diesel car."
Though diesels have undergone something of a renaissance in this country over the last few years, most Americans remain unfamiliar with the idea of a diesel car. A diesel truck, sure, but a CAR? There go those stares again.

New Porsches Going on Aluminum Diet
New Porsches Going on Aluminum Diet

Porsche will launch a cascade of new models over the next two years. The new 911, codenamed 991, is on a new platform with a lot of aluminum that will be shared with the Boxster/Cayman family. It's difficult and slow to build the new platform alongside the old one at Zuffenhausen, the main factory. The company's production people want to get all the old models out of the way as soon as possible.

Two years ago, Ford brought a then-new 2009 Ford F-150 to the North American truck market. A 6-inch boost in wheelbase accommodated both bigger cabs and longer rear springs, which in turn provided more hauling capacity and a smoother ride. A new six-speed gearbox improved drivability and fuel economy.

According to Mercedes-Benz, 95 percent of its C-Class buyers opt for an automatic transmission. With so few Americans going for the three-pedal models, you'd think Stuttgart would save a dime and discontinue the manual gearbox option all together, but they wouldn't dare.

You might have thought, as we did, that the world's most perfect, tidy, eminently usable folding soft top didn't need to be replaced by a power-operated folding hardtop. Particularly in a simple, elemental car like the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the inevitable added weight and complexity could dull its reflexes and blur its focus.

“Wider is better.” It’s best remembered as a tagline used over the decades by Pontiac, but Subaru might want to see if GM’s willing to give up the trademark. That’s because the Japanese company plans to debut a revised 2011 Impreza WRX with an increased track and wide-body sheetmetal lifted straight from its STI big brother. The official unveil will happen at the New York auto show.

Ford Motor Company's Plan for Recovery
Ford Motor Company's Plan for Recovery
With Ford's market share in the U.S. slip-sliding away, president of the Americas Mark Fields has said the company has to "change or die." But his long-awaited "Way Forward" plan, announced amid much hype on January 23, fell short of the radical turnaround plan many analysts expected.

A Maserati for the Masses
A Maserati for the Masses
Maserati is set to build a midsize sport luxury sedan to rival the likes of the BMW 5 Series/M5, Mercedes CLS/AMG, Jaguar XF/XFR, and Cadillac CTS/CTS-v. The car is smaller than the Quattroporte, which will continue. It will go on market about 2014, probably as a '15 model in the U.S. Although it's in the product plan, there's no frozen design (one possible look is depicted in the illustration), and running prototypes would be years away. Maserati wants to become a "relevant player" within its chosen luxury segments. Adding the new model would allow it to strengthen dealer coverage and brand visibility. The all-new car is part of Maserati's 2010-'14 business plan, which Fiat Group CEO Sergio Marchionne recently revealed to investors.
